Moving overseas? This is an incredibly exciting time and the start of a new chapter in your life, but before you can embark on this adventure you need to pack up your current abode and declutter so that you can make a fresh start in the new country. This can be laborious and time-consuming, but it is an essential step and should not be too difficult with the following advice.

What to Keep

First, you will want to decide what to take with you. You will want to keep this to a minimum if possible to reduce the stress and price of international shipments (particularly for large objects). Therefore, items that you will want to keep include personal items, ornaments and artwork, valuable electronics and any rare items and anything with emotional value. You may be tempted to take all of your furniture, but remember that it could be much cheaper to buy new items out there and this is easier and gives you the chance for a fresh start.

What to Get Rid Of

This means that everything else can go. Furniture, kitchen items, cheap electronics, decorative items which you do not hold dear and similar items can be disposed of. It is a fantastic idea to sell anything that people will be interested in as this can give you a tidy sum to buy new items in the new country. Online auctions or garage sales are the best places to sell second-hand household items. For items that can’t be sold, consider giving them away to friends and family for free, donating them or recycling (if possible). Anything else will need to be scrapped.

Shipping Items

Any items that you want to keep will need to be shipped internationally. Fortunately, this is easier and cheaper than ever thanks to established international couriers. Overseas shipments to Germany, for example, could even be completed next day (although you may want to put items into storage for a while). Most courier companies have a range of shipment options, so it can be easy to fit the delivery around your move.

Decluttering your home can be a mammoth task and it will take time to complete, but it can be much easier when you separate items to keep and items to dispose of. You will want to significantly lighten your load to move overseas, but fortunately, there are lots of ways to get rid of household items which could even give you a tidy sum ahead of the move.
