Well our school summer holidays are drawing to an end up here in Scotland and I have to say, as our first experience as parents of the summer break (and our council throwing in an additional week this year… Deep end or what!) I’m genuinely surprised at how quick it has gone.  I’ve not had a chance to organise a break away, or any big days out at such.  A stark comparison to my memory of summer holiday length as a child!

Anyway, thankfully we are all set for the return to school.  I grabbed all the bit we needed fairly early on, not that Liv has outgrown any of her current uniform, but I think it’s nice to return to school in a fresh uniform.

With that being said, I have some tips for those of you still have a few weeks left, or those who are going to tackle the back to school shopping this weekend.

Bulk Buy School Uniforms

It’s always irritating trying to locate the right school uniform mid-term.  Whether that is embroidered uniforms, or knee-length socks, I like to stock pile enough to allow for items going missing, getting torn or simply outgrown.  That way I don’t have a mad dash on my hands when the inevitable happens.  Especially if there are offers on, such as M&S 20% off at the start of the holidays.

You’ll have no problem selling what you don’t use on a selling site or local facebook groups. Or keep for younger siblings.

Invest in a family Calendar

One of the best things that happened to me last year was another mum giving me a family calendar, prewritten with all the school important dates in.  I could have kissed her!  Since then, I vow to keep this going.  It’s great for knowing what everyone is up to, and who needs to be where and when.

Join The Parents Facebook Group or What’s App

Whether it’s snow closures, school trips or homework, either join the schools official parents group, or if you know a few of the parents already, create a what’s app or messenger group.  I’ve lost count of how many times one child came home without a note about homework, a trip or event and some of us are more forgetful that others (ahem… me!) so, this has been a life saver. I’d go as far as to say I couldn’t have gotten through the first year without this wonderful bunch (you know who you are!)

Get up 10 Minutes Earlier

I’m a fan of a ‘cushion’ of time. That way if you do hit traffic, need to defrost the car, or get toothpaste on the uniform, you have a little leeway so that you’re not rushing or late.
